FYI: Fractions are Easy as Pi

So, I'm a super math nerd. I just get math. And then some. Math is, like, just the thing I do. Don't ask. I don't know. Dad wanted me to be Math major in college because I was so good at it. But, I was like, "What would I do with a brain if I had one?" I mean, Daddy always told me, "Those than can, do. Those that can't..." Well, you know the rest. So, I knew teaching was out of the question, and what else do you do with a Math degree? Shudder. I don't even want to think about it.

Anywho, I have someone very near and dear to me who is going back to school to do phlebotomy (say that five times fast). So as not to embarrass said person (because people can be funny about these things), I won't mention names. But, this person is having to take a Math class because they are completely out of the loop on that crap at this point. (This person has been out of school for...er...well, they might slap me, so I won't even say.)

This person, like many people, hates fractions. "What did that sweet, little fraction ever do to you?", I ask. But, they don't care. They hate fractions, and fractions hate them! So, to help ease this fractiony mess, I've made a little study/cheat sheet for fractions. It includes the four operators (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

Since I never had a problem with fractions, I can't really say, but I thought it might help someone out there. So, I've posted the pages on here as jpgs. You can click both for a larger view, and they should print out well on an 8.5"x11". You can even print it front and back, as it is two pages. I included the prime numbers from 1 to 1000 for help with reducing fractions, and I tried to explain it as simply as possible. Please don't take that to mean I am insulting your intelligence. I just don't see the need to use all that stupid textbook jargon. I mean, if you want that, go read a text book. Duh.

Anyway, if anyone stumbles upon this, and they have a question, please feel free to leave a comment or email me. I will be more than happy to help in any way I can. I'm a dork like that.

  1. I never understood what was so hard about fractions. I wasn't the greatest at advanced college math, but I always thought fractions were easy.

  2. Everyone's brains work differently. Some people can get it and some people can't. I mean, I can't draw for shit. But I can do math. It's just like that.

  4. Wow, this is great! I'm a bit of a geek myself (I passed the bar exam and became an attorney at 23 years old). I totally get fractions, but I just printed this out and am saving it for when my 8 year old learns it, which I think is next year in fourth grade. Yes, I drive the poor kid crazy, teaching him things before he even learns them in school, as well as things they don't even get to in school.

Btw, I always see your terrific comments at Clay's blog, in case you're wondering how I ended up here checking out your blog. It's a very nice blog, actually!

Thanks for the lesson on fractions!
